I know a bunch of y’all don’t like the choppy framerate, and for me it was uncomfortable in the first two episodes, but after that i 1) got used to it and 2) became too invested in the plot to notice or care lmao. this post is not to convince you that it’s good and great and you should love it, just that i, as an artist and 2D animator, think there’s more to the art style and direction than frame rate, and want to gush about it!
so with that out of the way, here’s a bunch of things i like about the art style of The Dragon Prince:
1. Expressive characters
2. fluid in-betweens on a 3D model??? HOW DID THEY DO THAT???
3. Ezran and Callum’s deep-set eyes
4. the eyebrow skin bunching over the eye + the mouth moves up and down like a real mouth????? AND SIDE TO SIDE?!?!? WOW???????
5. NO ANNOYING BREATHING MOTION UNLESS CHARACTER IS OUT OF BREATH (cue only character who breathes on the show)
6. EXCELLENT BODY LANGUAGE: shoulder’s up, teeth clenched, eyebrows arched and knotted, elbows in, this all happens in a split second!
7. the part where Gren is physically taller than Amaya but the camera mostly shows her at an angle that makes her look bigger/more prominent because she outranks him + she’s the one speaking
EXCEPT FOR THAT ONE TIME WHERE SHE’S SPEAKING TO HIM AS A FRIEND AND THEY’RE SHOWN AS EQUALS UGH GENIUS
8. excellent mix of painted 2D backgrounds/effects and 3D characters, it’s hard to tell which is which sometimes!
9. consistent lighting direction, injuries, and accessory/clothes in every scene. case in point: Rayla’s injury right after it happens:
and in the next episode, a night or two later:
10. RUNAAN BLUSHES AND BRUISES BLUE!!!!!! (I thought it was an elf thing, but Rayla blushes and bruises peach and red??)
