Update: The castle as of April 2015 is actually only around $1,300,000 USD now due to the currency exchange rates! 😀
this goes even further, some European countries will give you a castle for free if you submit a plan stating how you intend to restore or preserve it. Italy alone for example has somewhere between 100 and 300 castles they intend to give away to anyone with intent to be a caretaker, they literally cant keep track of how many discount castles are up for grabs
it doesn’t even have to be an ambitious plan, even if it says you just intend to keep it from becoming more shitty and will occasionally add a few bricks when you can afford it. given that most of them come with land you could convert the grounds to actually produce enough income to pay for the repairs- like setting up apple trees and brewing cider you sell with your castle name on the bottle, or raising some goats for cheese, a hobby farm could turn this into an actual income opportunity. hell, throwing parties at the castle could make it an income opportunity
they will literally –GIVE– you a castle to make sure someone is taking care of it rather then let them all sit empty
caravaggio was INCREDIBLY rowdy. he killed a dude by accident while trying to castrate him. did you know that? i just learned that recentlyÂ
he also used a prostitute, either one he knew or just the swollen corpse of one who was found dead in a river, as a reference for the virgin mary in one of his most famous paintings (that the commissioners rejected saying it was indecent). he threw a dish in a guy’s face because he answered a question in a way he didn’t like, and then proceeded to chase him around the inn with his drawn sword. he also killed another guy for a fight over a foul during a tennis match (and this guy happened to come from my own town?). if my former art teacher wasn’t just making up stories, he had one or more hit men after him (and a death sentence everybody knows about that he escaped from for years). when he was travelling to rome so that the pope could finally revoke his death sentence, he died of illness after some troubles, but his body wasn’t actually found until some decades ago. it took a team of people and over a year of research to recover and recognize a formerly anonymous skeleton as his own, and there’s only an 85% certanty that it’s actually his anyway. somebody is discovering he might have actually been killed on accident by a hit man who wasn’t even after him, or one that was after him and just caught him before the pope could revoke his sentence. basically this guy was very rowdy and had a rowdy and peculiar life and death.
