why do people write “bad at communicating” as jake’s main trait like dirk didn’t literally create a robot to talk to his friends for him
It’s more like he created a program to talk to himself and it goes and talks to his friends for him anyway, but., still
lil hal is an autoresponder,built to imitate dirk to his friends when dirk is predisposed. dirk argues with him because he’s dirk and he’d start a fist fight with a mirror if he accidentally sneered into one
I think the reason Homestuck has such staying power is that deep down, every millennial has two warring wishes – to become a cool hero and make a new perfect world with your best friends, or to be struck by a big space rock, killing us instantly.
honestly out of everyone jade reminds me of like..childhood. i dont mean this is a weird infantilizing way i mean like. the childhood aspect is arguably my fav thing about homestuck like god would i rather cling to nostalgia than live in the present! and there we have jade, a girl who practically raised herself yet was the most uh..childish of all of them
im trying to figure out a way to say this that doesnt come off as belittling her lol. homestuck is a story about kids, and what it’s like being 13, and growing up (its hard being a kid) (its hard and nobody understands) while dealing w trauma, gay depression, etc. a kid such as rose is childish in the way she thinks she knows everything; a kid such as terezi is childish w her trademark belief in righteousness; these are traits which are challenged and transform as they grow up
and then a kid such as jade is childish in a way that i think resonates w a lot of girls. like shes introduced in act 1/act 2 as a Girl who uses emojis and exclamation points and grows a garden and has cute curly handwriting, which is common among little girls! and then she also shoots rifles and ziplines across lakes and builds robots. which we remember also resonated with us as little girls. she embodies childhood – one where a young girl gets to grow up on an island w no parents who sees the future in the clouds and has a golden magic kingdom all to herself, how exciting
like for us thats nostalgia, cuz it was a happier time and we’ve grown since then. and jade grows up too – she sheds the naivety associated w childishness and learns to stop being so trusting. we see her struggle w loneliness and see some of that self loathing leak in! but homestuck pointedly let us see jade still making trollsonas near the end of act 6. like i dont think she’ll ever not be the girl who dreams up four arms to play a four-armed bass, which like, is that not the ideal in life
